Isata, who goes by IS, is FA’s younger sister as well as the youngest daughter of Mamaland. FA and IS’s mother died, which left the girls in the care of their aunt who is very young with 2 young children of her own. Efforts to locate the girls’ father were unsuccessful as he was from a different tribe. He had traveled to the area to work in a gold mine, but returned to his province when the mine went out of business. Their aunt brought them to Mamaland personally, begging for them to be helped as she was no longer able to care for the girls. IS is a super fun, feisty, silly girl with a contagious laugh and an amazing zest for life. She arrived at Mamaland presenting quite shy and not knowing any letters or numbers. It has been remarkable to hear her speaking so well, reading fluently and belting out songs at the top of her lungs, during morning prayer. IS’s giddy laugh and huge smile can brighten up anyone’s day!
